What is fleet management?
Fleet management is the set of practices an organisation uses to monitor, operate, and maintain its vehicles. Many people reduce it to location tracking, but tracking is only one part.
The main areas
- Tracking and location — where a vehicle is now and where it has been
- Driving behaviour — speeding and harsh braking
- Maintenance — scheduling routine work and recording what was done
- Drivers — binding a driver to a vehicle and following their tasks
- Reporting — measuring distance and driving time over a period
Where to start
Start with one question you want answered: how far do your vehicles travel each day? When do they leave the working area? How often is speeding recorded? The question decides what you need to measure, and what you measure decides the tools.
