Five metrics worth watching
Fleet operating costs rarely jump all at once. They usually leak slowly, through numbers nobody is watching.
1. Distance per vehicle
Comparing distance across vehicles shows which one is working beyond its share, and which is barely used.
2. Idle time
The engine runs while the vehicle sits still. A little is normal; a lot, repeatedly, is worth looking at.
3. Speeding frequency
Speeding raises fuel use and increases the odds of fines and wear.
4. Harsh braking
A signal of a driving style that consumes tyres and brakes faster than expected.
5. Unplanned maintenance
The higher the ratio of emergency work to scheduled work, the higher the cost.
How to read them
A periodic fleet report collects distance, driving time, and alert counts per vehicle. Comparing two periods shows the trend far more clearly than any single number.
