Geofencing in practice

Real examples of geofence use, and when alerts help versus when they become noise.

Geofencing in practice

A geofence is a circle on the map around a place you care about, with an alert on entry or exit. The idea is simple; using it well is what matters.

Useful examples

  • The depot — alert on exit, to know when deliveries actually began
  • A customer site — alert on arrival, instead of calling the driver to ask
  • The operating area — alert on leaving the agreed city or region

When it becomes noise

Draw a zone around every place a vehicle passes daily and you will get dozens of alerts and stop reading them. Tie an alert to an event you would actually act on.

A practical tip

Start with two or three zones. Over two weeks, note which alerts made you do something. Delete the ones that did not.
